Digital Cameras

A digital camera is an electronic device used to capture and store photographs electronically. Like the name suggests, a digitial camera stores the image digitally instead of using photographic film like the conventional cameras that many of us grew up with, or recording images in an analog format to magnetic tape like many video cameras or camcorders, as they used to be known. The modern digital cameras are typically compact and multifunctional, with some devices capable of recording sound and video as well as photographs. As prices have fallen in Western markets, digital still cameras now outsell their 35 mm camera counterparts.

The first digital camera that saved images as a digital file was the Fuji DS-1P. It first went to market in 1988 and recorded up to a 16 MB with its internal memory card and used a battery to keep the data in memory. This camera was never marketed commercially or privately in the United States. The first commercially available digital camera was in 1991. The Kodak DCS-100 marked the beginning of a long line of professional SLR cameras by Kodak that were based in part on film bodies, often Nikons. It used a 1.3 megapixel sensor and was priced at $13,000 or more.

The move to digital formats was helped by the formation of the first JPEG and MPEG standards in 1988, which allowed image and video files to be compressed for storage. The first consumer camera with a liquid crystal display on the back was the Casio QV-10 in 1995, and the first camera to use CompactFlash was the Kodak DC-25 in 1996.

The consumer digital camera marketplace was originally for low resolution cameras built for utility. In 1997 the first megapixel cameras for the public were marketed. The first camera that offered the ability to record video clips was the Ricoh RDC-1 in 1995. This is just one prime example of ther versatility of digital cameras and why they slowly grew to dominiate the marketplace.

In the year 1999, we saw the introduction of the Nikon D1. This next generation camera was a 2.74 megapixel digital camera. It was the first digital SLR developed entirely by a major manufacturer. The total cost of the camera was under $6,000. This number may seem high but it was affordable by professional photographers and high end consumers. This digital camera also used Nikon F-mount lenses, which meant film photographers could use many of the same lenses they already owned.

In the year 2003, the digital camera marketplace saw the introduction of the Canon Digital Rebel, also known as the 300D. This modern-day camera had a 6 megapixels and the first DSLR priced under $1,000. It was heavily marketed and soon became a favorite of many. It marked one of the first mass-market digital cameras.
